What is equipment financing

A loan secured by the equipment it buys.

Equipment financing is a loan used to buy business equipment, where the equipment itself serves as collateral. Because the lender can recover the asset if payments stop, equipment loans are often easier to qualify for than unsecured financing and can come with more favorable terms.

Instead of draining your reserves on a truck, an oven, a CNC machine or a full studio setup, you spread the cost over the years the equipment is earning money for you. Terms typically run one to six years, ideally lining up with how long the asset will stay productive.

Equipment financing vs. leasing

With financing, you own the equipment once the loan is repaid. With a lease, you pay to use it for a set period and may have the option to buy it, upgrade, or return it at the end. Financing usually makes sense for equipment with a long useful life that you plan to keep. Leasing can suit technology that goes out of date quickly.

New, used and down payments

Many lenders finance both new and used equipment. Some may ask for a down payment, often depending on your credit, time in business and the type of asset. Have a quote or invoice from the seller ready, since lenders will want to know exactly what you are buying and what it costs.

Tax considerations

Equipment purchases may qualify for deductions such as Section 179, which can let businesses deduct some or all of the cost in the year the equipment is placed in service. Rules and limits change, so talk to your tax advisor about how financing a purchase affects your return.

Who qualifies

Three basics open most equipment loans.

Because the equipment secures the loan, approval often weighs the asset as much as your credit. These baselines open most of our partner's products.

Time in business

Many options open up after as little as four to six months of operating history.

Monthly gross sales

About $120,000 a year in revenue shows you can carry the payment.

Options exist for most credit profiles. Stronger credit can reduce or remove a down payment.

How it works

From quote to equipment in hand.

  1. 1

    Apply with your quote

Answer a few questions about your business and the equipment. It takes minutes and won't affect your credit.

  2. 2

    Review your offers

A dedicated funding advisor compares terms, payments and any down payment across lenders.

  3. 3

    Get funded

Choose your offer and funding is typically sent in two to five days, often directly to the seller.

The trade-offs

Why finance instead of paying cash?

Equipment financing protects your working capital. Here is the full picture.

Where it shines

  • The equipment secures the loan, which can ease approval
  • Keeps cash free for payroll, marketing and growth
  • Fixed payments make budgeting predictable
  • Possible tax advantages; ask your advisor

What to plan for

  • The lender holds a claim on the equipment until it is paid off
  • A down payment may be required
  • Only covers the equipment, not other expenses
  • Total cost includes interest over the term

What owners finance with it

  • Vehicles and trucks
  • Manufacturing machinery
  • Restaurant and kitchen equipment
  • Medical and dental equipment
  • Studio and production gear
  • Computers and technology
